Abstract
The purpose of this study is to examine the difference in depressive symptoms by living arrangements and to explore the moderating effect of social capital (social network and social participation) in this relationship. Regression analyses were conducted using survey data conducted in 2022 among 700 older adults aged 65 or older (urban = 420, rural = 280) residing in the community in Jeju province. The results shows that the older adults living in the rural areas, those who live in couple households had a significantly lower level of depressive symptoms than single household persons. Second. those who reported higher social network(friends and neighbors) had lower levels of depressive symptoms. Third, for those who living in rural area, it was found that the social network had a significant moderating effect on the relationship between the types of living arrangement and depressive symptoms. The results suggest that latent social networks may play an important role during Covid 19 and the context in which the older adult live is important to be considered. Based on the results of this study, policy implications for older adults in pandemic situation were discussed.
